Shin Splints! Ouch! PDF Print E-mail

11/7/08

This month I have had a few clients suffering from shin splints.

I have not had shin splints in years, so I had to go do a little research to determine what exactly causes them and what solutions there are to this painful condition.

Here is what I found:

-Shin Splints are cause by a number of factors, but the two biggest are: Overuse (such as jogging more than normal or jumping more than normal) and Running  on Concrete

-Treatment for shin splints is similar to many other overuse injuries.  R.I.C.E.- Rest.Ice.Compression.Elevation.  For additional relief, talk to your doctor about taking a pain reliever.  Another important treatment is to massage the muscle.

Shin Splints stink and are not a fun feeling after your workouts.

Make it a great day!

Quicksand PDF Print E-mail

11/3/08

Have you ever seen the movie "The Replacements"?

There is a scene at half-time where the coach asks the player if there is anything they are scared of.

The starting quarterback stands up and says that he is afraid of quicksand, because when you get into it, it is hard to get out of and then the more you fight, the more stuck you get.  This was a metaphor that was talking about going back to a life without football.

Now, I don't expect that many of you would miss fitness at a supremely high level if there was a pill that would get you in great shape.  You probably wouldn't miss the weight sessions or the sprints.  But, for now, that pill doesn't exist.

So, until that pill is created I want to tell you to watch out for the quicksand.

It is very easy to miss a workout.

To decide that you don't need to go for that run today.

But as soon as you miss one, it is very easy to miss another.

Before you know it, you decide that it would be a ton of work to get back in the gym right now.

Instead of going and fighting it out and getting back in shape, you sit in the quicksand for a while, not doing anything, slowly sinking into worse and worse shape.

Finally, you decide that you have to get out of the quicksand and you go to the gym to try and get in shape, but you realize that you can't claw your way out on your own.

You need a rope to get you out!

Quit sitting, ignoring the rising quicksand or before you know it you will drown.

Go get your workout in today!  Don't wait, don't hope on someone else to take care of you.

Put the weight on your shoulders and make yourself look and feel better and be healthier.

If you want to get out of the quicksand, call MPT today and let me help you!

Make it a great day San Antonio!

Tabatas PDF Print E-mail

10/30/08

As many of you know, particularly if you are my client, I love short but high intensity cardio sessions.  Many times I have discussed the benefits of H.I.I.T. training here on my blog, such as using sprints for cardio training rather than long distance runs.

Another type of workout that are now starting to gain popularity are Tabatas.  Tabatas are only 4 minutes long, but they are done at a very high intensity level.  In a Tabata, you perform an exercise as fast as you possibly can for 20secs.  You then take a 10sec break, and then repeat this process 7 more times.  At the end of 4 minutes you should be exhausted, as you have pushed yourself at an extremely high intensity for over  3 minutes with 40 sec. coming as a brief rest to allow you body to take in oxygen.

If you are in good shape and you are looking for a way to push yourself a little further in your workouts then try doing a Tabata.  If after you complete the first Tabata and you feel good after taking a 1-3min break, then do another Tabata with a different type of exercise.  If you can do this type of exercise for a total of 20-24minutes you are in excellent shape.

If you can do 12-16minutes worth of Tabatas you are in good shape and you are getting in a great workout and you will continue to get in better and better shape!

Want to give a Tabata workout a shot?  Here is a series for you to try today:

-Jumping Jacks- 20sec fast/10sec rest- repeat 8 times

rest 2 mins

-Pushups-20sec fast/10sec rest-repeat 8times

rest 2 mins

-Squat Jumps- 20sec fast/10sec rest-repeat 8 times

rest 2 mins

-Sprints- 20sec @ 100%/10sec rest-repeat 8 times

Try that workout and if you are not exhausted at the end, then you simply did not go 100% throughout the workout!

If you are interested in trying Tabatas, but you know you won't have the discipline to push yourself hard enough to get anything out of it, then join the MPT Fitness Boot Camp .  We did a great workout yesterday that involved 5 rounds of Tabatas and everyone was exhausted by the end!  Tabatas are part of the reason people in the MPT Fitness Boot Camp have been able to lose upwards of 30+ pounds, while putting on muscle and completely changing their body composition!

Make it a great day San Antonio!

Toys for Tots Fitness Boot Camp PDF Print E-mail

10/29/08

T'was the month before Christmas and all through the city

Parents were stressed out and children were giddy.

The decorations were up and the sweets did abound,

The shapes of some people were getting quite round!

The children were hoping that Christmas would come,

But without a miracle there would be no gifts for some.

Nick had an idea, the marines joined in too,

And there just may be something that you can do!

Out on the lawn there will be quite a clatter,

With sprinting and sweating the noise will not matter.

MPT and Marines will run a boot camp together,

So come out and play, regardless of weather.

You will learn to get fit and to change up your routine,

And help Toys for Tots as you work to get lean.

The cost of entrance is one toy for one tot,

If we all give a little, it will help out a lot.

Three Marines and your trainer just may make you run,

But do rest assured it is all in good fun.

So call all your friends to help Toys for Tots grow,

And maybe allow your old waistline to show!

What a good way to work out and give back,

And start to work off the Christmas time snacks!

Thanks to you on Christmas children will yell "Horray"
