Fitness, Health and Water |

You have heard it a hundred times. Water has 0 calories, other drinks have lots of calories. Cut out the other drinks (alcohol, cokes, coffee) and you will be healthier and you will lose weight. Well I am not here to preach to the choir, I just want to give you some numbers to reinforce the idea:
1 Coke = 120 calories
1 Coke/Day = 43,800 calories/year
43,800 calories = 12.51 pounds of body fat
If you are trying to lose body fat and look better why are you still avoiding water?

If you have been watching the tv, listening to the radio, reading a magazine/newspaper or getting online in the last 2+months, you know that the stock market has really been taking a pounding. All of the doom and gloomers on the news are talking about the recession, about the soon to be depression, about the horrible way America has been run in regards to finances.
Personally, I don't prescribe to that way of thinking. It drives me crazy. People are always complaining about the government, how they don't do things right, how the "man" is holding them down. I believe in personal responsibility though. I think people need to stand up for themselves and take care of their life, not wait for someone else to come help them. In America people can be anything they want to be as long as they are willing to work for it. If people are poor right now, they can go work and improve their situation in life. No, they may not have all the advantages that someone else has, but they can still make their life better and better until one day they are on top!
One of the neat things about owning and running a personal training studio is that I get to see the variety of personalities that make up America. Getting in shape is much the same as succeeding in America. Some people have better genetics than others. Some people are naturally skinny, while others are naturally muscular. Still others have grown up eating a diet full of cheese while others have grown up learning to love vegetables. Owning MPT has given me the opportunity to see how different personalities respond to different situations. Some people decide that they are going to get in shape, so they come and try a boot camp or try a personal training session, but decide that it is too hard and that they just can't work that hard to make their life better. Other people come in however and while they know it will be hard, they know it will be time consuming and they know that it will be frustrating at times, they push through and overcome. These are the kind of people that I like! These people put 110% in to helping themselves. They change their life for the better. They eat right, they workout regularly, they push themselves beyond what they thought was possible and they become better and healthier because of those changes.
You have the decision today to determine which type of person you want to be. Are you going to be the person who complains about the bad things that happen to them and how they can't change the cards that are delt or are you going to be the person who determines that no matter where the bottom is, this is where you are getting off and starting a better path for yourself?
I truely believe that everyone of us can be the person who overachieves and does something great. I believe that everyone of you that steps into this studio are on your way to becoming that person and that it is my job to show you the right direction.

Okay, you are have followed my advice from yesterday and you are eating the right amount of food and taking in the right amount of fluids everyday and you are eating good healthy foods. What's next?
The answer is exercise! Now, what type of exercise should you do? I'll be honest with you and say that it doesn't matter what type of exercise you prefer in the early going. Some people love to get their exercise in by doing sprints, others like to do marathon like jogs. Still others like to go to the gym and lift weights, while others will only do bodyweight resistance exercises. Any of these forms of exercise is a great way to get started to getting in shape. Find one type of exercise that you enjoy the most and be religious about getting your workouts in. Do not allow yourself an excuse not to do it!
As you get healthier and healthier, you will probably have to change up your workouts a little bit to get the exact body type you want, but to get started, simply pick a form of exercise that you will enjoy and get after it! Your goals can be accomplished, the question is, are you ready to commit to accomplishing them?

How Much Should You be Eating? |
|
|
|
|
10/7/08
Are you trying to do better about eating? Trying to eat the right foods at the right time in the right portion amount?
Well one of the first things you need to do to help yourself create a caloric deficit and thus lose body fat is calculate how much you need to be eating.
A pretty easy rule of thumb to follow is to take your body weight and multiply it by 15. This is the amount of calories you need to maintain your current body weight. I weigh 200lbs. 200x15=3000calories. Therefore, according to this rule I need to eat 3000calories per day to maintain my current body weight.
In order to lose weight and body fat you will need to reduce the amount of calories you take in to be below your caloric needs for weight maintainance. A good place to start is a 15-20% reduction in calories to achieve weight loss. To determine this, simply reduce fifteen by 20%, which is 12, then multiply 12 by your body weight. For me 200x12=2400calories.
According to this theory I would need to eat 2400 calories to achieve weight loss. If 1lb of body fat equals 3500calories, I should lose about 1lb of body fat every 5.8 days.
In summary, if you are trying to lose weight/body fat, you need to be eating less than your body burns. To determine what you need to be eating, multiply your body weight by 12. This is the number of calories you should eat each day.
