Reason 2: Lack of Consistency PDF Print E-mail

12/10/08

The second biggest reason I have found that people don't succeed in their fitness goals is simply that they are not consistent in working to obtain those goals.

If you workout four times in one week, and then skip four or five days the next week without doing anything that pushes you to your limits, then you are not being consistent.

The other half of the equation is your diet.  If you are not eating a diet that fits your goals, then you are in an uphill battle.

You know you need to be consistent with your workouts, and it is easy for me to tell you to be consistent with eating right and working out regularly, but you need to know how you can do that without sacrificing your lifestyle and happiness.

Fair enough.  Here are some ways that I personally use and I have had my clients use with success to stay consistent.

  1. Don't complete all your workouts in the same location.  We all get bored with the same workouts over and over.  Being bored, will lead to a lack of interest and thus you will not be consistent with your workouts.  If typically workout with dumbbells in your garage, then go to the gym.  If you typically go to the gym, find a basketball court near your house and either play basketball or if you are not good at basketball, make yourself run sprints on the court and follow that with pushups/situps/squats.
  2. Create a schedule.  You have a schedule for other things in your life, such as work, kids, school, etc.  Why not plug in 30min-1hr, 4-6 times per week to get a workout in?
  3. Plan your lunch and dinner schedule.  Sarah is better at this than I am.  On Sunday of every week, she creates a list and determines exactly what we will eat.  Based on that, she then creates her grocery list.  When she goes to the grocery store, she doesn't buy any extras.  This keeps us consistent on many levels.  Number 1, we know what we are going to be eating.  This keeps us from guessing what we are going to eat for dinner and then deciding to go get fast food just because we are hungry.  When it is on the plan, she just comes home and gets it ready.  Number 2, because she plans our meals and does not buy junk food just because it sounds good when grocery shopping, we don't have junk food in the house.  If we want an after dinner snack, like ice cream, we have to make a decision to go out and buy it.  This takes energy at the end of a long day that we rarely have, so we eat less junk food.

Hopefully, these three tips will help you stay consistent with your diet and your workouts.  If you ever need someone to help keep you on track, don't hesitate to call or e-mail me.

Make it a great day!

5 Reasons You are Not Succeeding! PDF Print E-mail

12/9/08

Last night I went do to a cardio session with one of my clients at Blossom Athletic Center.  As we were walking in, she told me that she had lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks.  That included the Thanksgiving Holiday period!  What great results at a time when most people were adding weight, not losing it!  I asked her, what it was that allowed her to achieve such good results.  Her answer was simple.  She quit giving herself excuses and started following her plan to get in shape.

Maybe you feel like you are giving it all you have, but you still are not reaching your goals the way this person is. Over the next five days, I will show you the 5 reasons that most people fail at an exercise program.  Some may pertain to you and others may not.  Hopefully, they will get you thinking and show you how to get the results you desire so bad!

Here is the first reason people don't succeed at fitness:

1) LACK OF GOALS- What are results?  Okay, what I mean is, what are the results you want to see?  I can't tell you how many clients come to me, and when I ask them what results they want to see or feel they don't have an answer for me.  If they do have an answer for me, it is typically, I want to lose 20lbs.

If you don't have goals, here are some guidelines to making SMART goals:

  • Specific-  Create goals that are detailed and will give you the exact look and feel you want.
  • Measurable-  Goals have to be measurable.  If you can't measure your goal, how do you know when you have obtained them?
  • Attainable-  When you determine which goals are important to you, start to develop a plan on how you will reach them.  Somehow, someway, you must have a way to reach your goals.
  • Realistic- Make your goals something that are reasonable to obtain.  Just because we can reach a certain look, doesn't mean that they are realistic for us.  For example, it is possible for me to become a rocket scientist.  I would have to spend a lot of time studying, but it is obtainable.   Unfortunately, because I am trying to run a business, this goal is not realistic right now, although at some point it is possible.
  • Timely-  This is the biggest mistake I see in clients.  Set goals that you can reach in a short period of time that will help you reach your big goals in a longer time.  So many people want to workout to lose weight.  Unfortunately, they have not worked out in over a decade and therefore have to ease themselves into the groove of working out.  Instead of saying they are going to lose 40lbs in 4 months, they should start out by saying that their goal is to workout everyday for the next 2 weeks for atleast 30 minutes/day.

So, today I want you to think about what your goals need to be in order for you to achieve the look or feel you desire.  If you already have goals, that is great.  Re-evaluate them today and make sure that they follow the SMART philosophy.

Be sure to check back here tomorrow, where I will show you the second reason that people fail with their workouts and how you can change that!

 Make it a great day!

Butterbean PDF Print E-mail

12/8/08

I don't know about you, but for me, there is no companion better than a dog.

Some people are cat people, others don't like having pets at all, but for me, a dog is a pet that can do things with you and have fun in the process.

This weekend as Sarah and I were driving to the mall to do our Christmas shopping, we saw a pet adoption "fair" being put on by the Animal Defense League and others, out in front of the Palladium movie theater.

We stopped planning on just looking at the dogs.  Well, one caught our eye and she ended up coming home with us.  Her name is Butterbean, but we just call her Bean.

If you are in the studio, you may just see Bean as she will be traveling with me to work.

Here are some pictures of Me, Sarah and Bean at McAllister Park this weekend:

Invest in Yourself PDF Print E-mail

Many of you know my wife Sarah and some of you workout with her in the morning at our 6am bootcamp.  The other day I asked her for a blog topic and instead of giving me a topic, she did me one better and wrote a blog!  Below is a picture of Sarah and I for those of you who have not met her, and below that is her blog.

Most of us have to watch what we eat AND work out. Missing one regularly scheduled workout may not show up immediately in your skinny jeans (just like making it to one workout won’t get you out of your fat ones) but missing a workout opens to door to missing another workout. Getting into shape is hard but getting out of shape is so easy.

Having dinner plans that last too late and then a really busy day the next day seems like a great reason not to get up early for your bootcamp but in reality being fit gives you additional energy and will help burn off those margarita calories from last night. Yes, they count even at a birthday party. So how do you get your soon to be tiny hinny out of bed? It helps to have a partner or group that you are accountable to. If you do not make it you will be missed. Having goals also helps if you can see how you are reaching them on a one-day-at-a-time basis. Understanding the long term health benefits is also motivational sometimes, but not usually at 5 a.m. when my alarm goes off.

In reality those are not enough to motivate most people most days. As a woman I care how I look at special events and in pictures. Pick a too tight dress to wear to your friends wedding and work to make it fit. Aim to be the most toned bridesmaid or the one with the best abs in the hot tub on your ski trip this year. Seriously. I bet you forgot about what people will see when you take off that puffy coat. Well remember pal because looking fabulous comes with a price tag. My price is paid a few mornings a week but the confidence gained is worth even more. It is like an investment. Every squat is a dime in the toned thigh fund, every crunch is a nickel toward great abs. Even if you can’t initially deposit $1000, you can put in a few cents a day and watch it add up. Just remember that the coke in your hand is a 25 cent withdraw.

Make a deposit today. Do sets of squats to failure. If it has been years since you have bent your knees you may fail after less than ten. To failure means do them until you get down and can’t get back up. If you have rock hard thighs you may only need to do one or two sets all day but if your legs tremble at the thought of a squat you will need to do as many as you can SEVERAL TIMES throughout the day. See if you can do 100 crunches today, even if they are not all in one attempt. There’s five bucks!

10 Fitness Gift Ideas PDF Print E-mail

12/2/08

If you are like me, you may have a hard time thinking of gift ideas for your friends and family.

To try and help you out, I have created a list of 10 Fitness Gifts that you could give to the fitness buff in your family:

1) A Fitness or Nutrition Book-  Terrell Owens just came out with a new book that details his fitness routine.  Click this link for more info: http://www.blackvoices.com/blogs/2008/11/19/terrell-owens-fitness-book/

2) A Massage- If you know someone who works out regularly, then this would be a great gift Idea.  A massage will help relax their muscles and allow them to enjoy the holidays.

3) Golf Balls from a Driving Range-  Okay, your friend or family member may not like golf, but I am sure they have a sport that they enjoy participating in.  If they like golf, buy them a bucket of balls at the Blossom Driving Range off of Thousand Oaks (they gave us a gift certificate to give away at our Toys for Tots Boot Camp, which is why I am giving them a plug here).  If they don't like golf, do they like baseball?  Buy them a session at the batting cage.  Maybe they like running, buy them a pair of shoes, or a new stop watch!

4) A Cooking Lesson-  If your friend or family member is a true fitness buff, then nutrition is very important to them.  Buy them a cooking lesson.  Just go to yahoo.com and type in San Antonio Cooking Lessons and you will find a variety of locations that offer these services.

5) A Gift Card to Sporting Goods Store-  So a gift card may not seem like you put a lot of thought into it, but your fitness buff friend would really enjoy this gift.  Academy and Dick's are two huge sporting goods stores here in San Antonio and any fitness guru would love to have a gift card to one of these stores.

6) A Day at a Nearby State Park-  It is not expensive and it is a great way to spend a day with someone you enjoy.  Take them to a local state park and hike around.  You will be shocked at how hard to you work climbing around trails at Enchanted Rock or Guadalupe River State Park.

7) A Magazine Subscription- We all need something to read and there is nothing better to read about before going to bed than your favorite hobby.

8) A Month Supply of their Favorite Supplement- A multi-vitamin, fish oil, and protein can start adding up in cost pretty quick.  Send your friend a supply of their favorite supplement and you will make them very thankful for a friend like you!

9) Nike Plus System- This is a tool that connects to your ipod and tracks the distance you run and allows you to sinc songs up to certain parts of your run.  A fun tool that any fitness enthusiast would enjoy. For more info go here: http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/?locale=en_us

10) An MPT Fitness Boot Camp Gift Certificate-  Sign yourself and a friend or family member up for one of MPT's Fitness Boot Camps.  For more information go here: http://www.sampt.com/fitness-boot-camp-in-san-antonio.html
