Energy Drinks PDF Print E-mail

5/21/09

This morning when I arrived back at my apartment, the maintenance man stopped me and asked me about a new energy drink that he had seen advertised by Lance Armstrong called FRS.

You can read more about FRS at their website: www.frs.com

I told him that I had not heard of FRS but that I would look it up and get back to him, but that I thought most energy drinks were/are an expensive way to stay awake.

Now, I am not writing this to say never to drink any energy drinks, but most of the benefits you receive from energy drinks, you can get from a well balanced diet.

60% of your body's energy comes from carbohydrates.  If you are eating an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables and some whole grain pastas and rices, then you should have more than adequate energy to get through your workouts and your day!

So, instead of spending nearly $60 for a 24 pack of FRS, go to the grocery store and stock up on good fruits and vegetables.  Eat them consistently throughout the day and you will feel great!

A Serving Size! PDF Print E-mail

5/19/09

The other day, I was talking with a client about her food diary.

She mentioned that she had cereal for breakfast.  And it turned out it was a healthy cereal!

So, why was she not losing weight.  Well it turns out, that what she thought was a serving was significantly more!

If you have trouble knowing exactly what a serving size is then look at this guide: http://www.fns.usda.gov/tn/healthy/Portions_Kit/serving_size.pdf

It should help you determine the proper serving sizes the next time you go to eat a meal or a snack!

The Office PDF Print E-mail

5/11/09

One of my favorite TV shows is The Office.

I realize that it drags out office life in a very exagerated way, but there are some realities to the Office that may relate to you.

On "The Office" they seem to have a party every other episode.  People order cakes and bring in cupcakes and ice cream.

This weekend I went into a couple of different real- estate offices and saw jars of candy on the receptionists desk, much like Pam has on The Office.

If your office resembles the show at all, then you have plenty of tempting moments to cheat on eating healthy.

So, how do you combat that?

My recommendation is to create your own food jar.  In your jar though, instead of having candy, have almonds.

When someone has a birthday, bring cupcakes for everyone else, but bring a healthy option as well.  A good choice is a fruit tray as it is sweet, but not an unhealthy food like cupcakes!

Being good with proper eating is not easy!  Once you establish some decent habits though, it will be easier and easier to repeat them.

Do you have any tricks on how eat better in the office?  If so, send me an e-mail and let me know!

Rob's Blog- Why Listen to an Out of Shape Personal Trainer PDF Print E-mail
I work out at a certain corporate gym from time to time and cant help but notice that most of their personal trainers are out of shape.  Why in the name of god would anyone take fitness advice from a “portly” personal trainer?  Seriously, you should only take advice from people who practice what they preach.   Example: Dr. Phil has a weight loss book.

Honestly...is Dr. Phil in good shape at all? If he wrote a book on how to have a successful talk show, then I would buy it if that is something I was looking to do. I would not buy a weight loss book written by him.

Even if your personal trainer is certified and out-of-shape, don't listen to them! If they don't have enough discipline to get in shape themselves, how are they going to motivate you? That is a big part of being a personal trainer. I'd much rather listen to someone in good shape, than listen to someone who is certified.

Here is a question...would you rather get a Masters Degree in Business from Harvard, or get mentored by Bill Gates for 6 years? The difference is huge! I would chose to hang with Bill, no question about it! Harvard is a great University with great teachers, but Bill Gates is a man who "walks the walk" (even though he isn't "certified" and dropped out of business school).

Bottom line...be careful about who you take advice from!  Keep training SA!

It's Not Rocket Science...Do I have to Sweat? PDF Print E-mail

5/6/09

The other day I was talking with some clients after our first boot camp and we were discussing what type of exercise they should be doing on their days when they are not here at boot camp.

After describing the cardio workout I wanted them to complete, one of them asked what intensity they should do the cardio workout at, by asking, "Do I have to Sweat?"

Now, getting in shape is not rocket science.

There are techniques that you can follow to get in shape faster than other techniques.

But, there is no substitute for hard work!

They call it working out because you have to work to get results!

If you are not sweating during your workout, then you simply are not pushing yourself hard enough!

So, put the fork down, and start sweating!
