This morning I was driving to the studio and heard on the news that the President had created a fitness test for adults, to help motivate Americans to be in better shape. So when I got to the studio I did a little reasearch and found 2 sites: http://www.presidentschallenge.org/ & http://www.adultfitnesstest.org/ . The first site is the President's site dedicated to everything fitness related the President and his administration have created. The second site is specifically for the Adult Fitness Test and gives you guidlines for how to conduct the test, etc.
While I don't necessarily agree with all of the test (measuring BMI instead of Body Fat), I do think it is a good tool to help average Americans determine the minimum fitness standards they should have for themselves.
If you are new to exercise, use these measures as a standard for where you should be physically. If you have been exercising for a while, these tests are just the tip of the ice-berg for you, and you should continue to improve well beyond the measures given here.
No matter what your politcal view, you know that fitness should be an important part of your daily routine. The President recognizes this and his administration is trying to give you the tools to help you get into shape. Take advantage of this opportunity and lets make all Americans healthy and strong.

This weekend my fiance, Sarah, graduated from Texas A&M and moved back to San Antonio to find a job and get ready for our wedding in July. Sarah has always been in great shape. She was a wrestler in high school and is an avid fan of snow skiing. As an athlete she has always been in good shape and continued to keep a good physique all the way through college. The reason I am telling you this is because she really suprised me, when immediately after we got engaged, she mentioned to me that she needed to get in shape for our wedding! Being that she was already in great shape this caught me off gaurd, but it made something click that said, if Sarah wants to workout to look great in her wedding dress, so does every other girl. That is the reason for my blog today. If you are looking to get in shape for your upcoming wedding, then consider joining either our 6am-7am or 6:30pm-7:30pm boot camp class. The boot camps are great, because they allow you to save a little money compared to personal training which is a good thing knowing how much you will be spending for your upcoming wedding. Additionally, the peers in your boot camp will act as accountability, making you show up regularly and work hard while you are exercising, promising you good results.
If you are serious about getting in shape for an upcoming wedding, then join one of our fitness boot camps and get yourself looking perfect on your wedding day!
Make it a great day San Antonio!

This morning I took a client, who we will call "L" for our story today, out for a 20min. jog. Normally, I don't jog with clients, as they can do that at home, but I did this morning because I wanted to push L to show her what she could do if she pushed just a little beyond her comfort zone! After about 5 minutes of our jog, L's legs started to get tired, her heart rate was elevated and she was ready to start walking. She didn't though, she pushed through and worked to make herself better. At about the 10 minute mark, she was absolutely certain that she could not go a step further, but together we pushed forward as I reminded her to "just put one foot in front of the other." She pushed forward and punched through the brick wall that would have been her normal stopping point if she didn't have an external push! At about 18 minutes, L started to walk, so I literally put a hand on her back and helped push her through the 20 minute mark! She had done it! She made it to 20 minutes without stopping! Normally, she would have stopped after 10 minutes of a jog, but she pushed and made it to 20 minutes. In addition, she also did 2 sets of 20 pushups, 2 sets of 20 lunges and 2 sets of 30 crunches! She got a great workout in and she will be better for it in the long run!
I want everyone reading this to know that if you think you are pushing yourself as far as you can by yourself during a workout, think again! You don't have to have a personal trainer if you don't want one, but you should have some external accountability. A friend, a spouse or trainer can all be your extra push. Find someone who is in better shape than you are and have them workout with you! Have them push you to your limits and then a little further! Follow this advice and you will be amazed at the difference you see in results from before you had an external force and after.

So you have been working out regularly now right? Your body is starting to see changes, but for some reason you are now hitting a plateau! What should you do? You could adjust intensity by adjusting the weight, the reps or the speed in which you complete your exercises. I have a different suggestion however; start paying attention to your form! I have been playing raquetball at a local gym lately, and I have been paying attention to people lifting weights outside of the raquetball courts. I am amazed at the horrible form some people use when working out! They literally are going to injury themselves because of the bad form they use when they do squats and bicep curls.
If you are at a plateau in your results, go back to the basics, start paying attention to your form again just as you did when you first began working out. You will be amazed when you lower the weight and use the correct form at how quickly you start to see positive changes!

Today I was watching the second round of the Masters Golf Championship on ESPN and saw an interview with Gary Player, who set the record with the most starts ever in the Masters at 51 years.
During this interview, Mr. Player was asked what allowed him to continue to golf at such a high level for such a long time? His answer...his fitness routine. Gary Player didn't say that showing up at the driving range at 5am allowed him to play golf well for such a long time, nor that his smooth swing style kept him injury free for a long period of time. Instead, he pointed out that fitness was his key to success. Even today at 73 years of age he is involved in a weight lifting regimine.
Do you have a hobby that you really love and want to continue for a long time? Do you have a job that takes a toll on you both mentally and physically? Do you have a family that needs you to be able to be active? If so, take a page from Gary Players book of success and get on a fitness program. A fitness program will make you happier, it will make you healthier and it will allow you to do the things that you love much later in life than the average person. Take advantage of the tools you have at your disposal and get started on a new you today!
