The Biggest Fitness Myth! PDF Print E-mail

10/24/08

The biggest misconception people have in regards to fitness is related to spot reduction of fat!  What I mean, is that people who would like to lose their love handles or their beer gut feel that if they do 1000 crunches everyday that the beer gut will go away.  Some women think that if they work the inside part of their legs then the fat that shakes when they walk will go away.

Unfortunately, it's just not that easy!  Doing 1000 crunches a day will get you stronger abs, but it won't make you lose the fat that is on your gut!  In much the same way, doing lunges all day will get you a strong/firm rear-end, but if you have some fat sitting on top of it, it will still be there!

The good news is that even without being able to spot reduce fat, we can still get you to drop body fat and get you looking exactly the way you want to!  In order to do that however, we need to have a comprehensive plan to help you build muscle mass through resistance training while also getting you involved in some cardiovascular training to help you burn extra calories.

Don't believe the infomoercials.  There is no one product that will give you the perfect body.  With hard work, determination and the right motivation you can have that body though, and MPT would love to help you get there!

Re-Evaluate PDF Print E-mail

10/22/08

When you started with your fitness program, you should have written down what the goals were that you wanted to achieve.  If you didn't write them down, you probably still had goals that you wanted to achieve.

Today is as good a day as any to re-evaluate your goals and determine if you are doing what is necessary to achieve those goals.

A fitness program can be difficult.

You can do great working out, but you can eat poorly.

You could lift weights like a mad man/woman, but you could shy away from doing cardio.

There is no doubt that we all have our strengths and weaknesses.

So, today, sit down and make sure that your old goals have been achieved or are being worked towards.

Also, make new goals and make sure that you have an effective plan on how to achieve them.

If you need help creating a plan, remember that I am only a phone call or e-mail away!

Feeling Older? PDF Print E-mail

10/20/08

How many of you were in your best shape when you were in high school or college?

If you were in better shape after school, were you in your best shape in your twenties or early thirties?

Science has shown that the average person gains 1-2 pounds of body fat per year after they turn 35 years old.  Additionally, individuals lose a 1/2 pound of muscle per year after they turn 35.  These two events are intertwined because as we lose muscle our RMR is reduced, meaning we burn fewer calories at rest than we did when we had our additional 1/2 pound of muscle.

It is vital that as we get older we continue to exercise and in particular lift weights.  People tend to shy away from resistance training as they get older because they feel as though they need to do cardio to reduce their body fat.  While cardio is an important aspect of any training regimine, the older we get the more we need to incorporate weight training into our regimine for the reasons given above.

In addition to keeping your resting metabolic rate higher, weight training will also help prevent osteoperosis and other bone degenerative diseases.

If my grandmother at 85 years old can come into the studio and knock out 10 pushups, you should be able to as well!

A Good Laugh PDF Print E-mail

10/15/08

The stability ball or "Fitness Orb" is a great tool, provided that you use it properly.

Some trainers and a ton of info-mercials have overblown the use of these tools and make it out to be the end all be all of fitness.

Hopefully many of you are fans of The Office.  It is a great show that will have you rolling on the ground laughing.

Here is an interaction between Dwight and Gym regarding the "Fitness Orb" and Dwight is acting like many of the info-mercials I have seen for this product.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

I hope it gives you a good laugh.
